This past week Google reported that they have seen a number of state sponsored attacks on Gmail accounts. These attacks are meant to allow the hackers access to a users email account and any information they can find in it.
Google reports that the latest attempts at hacking the site is from Internet Explorer holes in its XML Core services. This hole could potentially allow the hacker access to your computer if you were tricked into opening the infected webpage via Internet Explorer.
Microsoft has released a tool to fix the issue but has not officially released a security patch for the issue yet.
If you get a notification that attempts have been made to access your email account unsuccessfully then it would be best to immediately change your password to something more secure in order to prevent getting hacked to begin with.
