Hacking Team’s spy program has been stolen.
Hacking Team, an Italian-based surveillance company, announced this week that their “flagship spy program,” Remote Control System (RCS), was stolen in a data breach.
In a statement released by Hacking Team, they wrote, “HackingTeam’s investigation has determined that sufficient code was released to permit anyone to deploy the software against any target of their choice.” They continued with, “We believe this is an extremely dangerous situation.”
While Hacking Team acknowledges the threat all malicious programs pose to businesses and home users alike, they feel the biggest threat is to themselves. It’s super-secret flagship spy program was the core of surveillance packages that sold for thousands of dollars. In their statement, they also wrote that they expect “that anti-virus companies are upgrading their programs to detect the compromised RCS.”
Well, that will definitely affect Hacking Team’s bottom line, but some good news did come from this. Adobe says it discovered a critical flaw in its Flash Player program when RCS became public. A patch is expected to be released shortly.
