Samsung Galaxy Fold: Mind-blowing, but does it need more time?
Rarely does a concept seem so crazy to me that I dismiss it almost instantly. Only when the myriad of potential negatives outweighs the positives. I’ve always been a huge fan of technology and the strides it’s made in the last few decades.
In my opinion, the cellular phone epitomizes the changes and advancement in technology. Having a high quality camera, a telephone, a video game system, a GPS unit, and more all in one device sounds like something from a sci-fi movie.
We once rushed to get the phone to its smallest functioning size, but there is another side of the coin (and something that has started to be more common): the desire for a larger screen.
Yes, tablets can run fairly large, and you can use it in ways similar to a cell phone, but it’s far too big to fit in your pocket.
… Unless you could fold it.
Essentially, that is what Samsung did with the Galaxy Fold. The Galaxy Fold has a 7.3 inch screen, but folds down to the size of a normal Samsung Galaxy phone. Sound’s awesome, right? So what’s the catch?
The phone has already been delayed multiple times due to screen issues. Samsung’s test batch of phones had more than five fail due to the frailty of the screen. Even normal pressing could cause damage before changes were made. Of course, at $2000 or so, that is a pretty large catch as well. With the phone being the first of its kind, it seems like a stiff price in order to be a part of the experiment.
Honestly, even at half the price, I couldn’t see myself jumping on the bandwagon. The reliability remains to be seen. It’s not a good sign when your major selling point is also the top of the list of problems. The release date has been pushed back after the test batch’s issues and a new date has yet to be announced. We’ll see how well the known problems are resolved.
You have to take the good with the bad, but I will definitely be waiting to make sure there is long-term good to be had.
