5G is targeted to launch in 2017.
Roger Gurnani, Chief Information Officer for Verizon, told CNET they plan to start to testing new wireless technology that will propel them into 5G speeds. Mr. Gurnani said, “Verizon will start field trials on the new technology within the next 12 months and hope to have some level of commercial deployment sometime in 2017.”
In a press release, Verizon confirmed its plans to start testing 5G (or Fifth-Generation) technology in the coming year. Verizon went on to say they will be working closely with Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung, Cisco and Ericsson to ensure that all supportive technologies will be able to take advantage of the faster connectivity speeds.
According to Verizon, 5G will offer speeds about 50 times faster than the current 4G LTE standard, will allow exponentially more Internet-connected devices, and latency will be measured in single milliseconds.
